Audio-Assisted Learning in Ayurveda Education: Perspectives on Sanskrit Shloka Retention and Digital Pedagogy

Abstract

Traditional Ayurvedic education was based on the Guru–Shishya system, where students learned Sanskrit shlokas through listening, repetition, and memorization. Today, challenges such as reduced oral learning practices, increasing academic pressure, and limited Sanskrit familiarity among students make shloka learning difficult. In this context, audio-assisted learning may serve as a helpful tool for improving shloka retention. Objective: To explore the potential role of audio-assisted learning in Sanskrit shloka retention and discuss its educational implications in contemporary Ayurvedic education. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using literature from Ayurveda education, auditory learning, educational technology, and memory science. Studies related to audio-based learning tools, digital teaching methods, memory reinforcement, and Sanskrit learning were reviewed and analyzed thematically. Result: The reviewed literature suggests that audio-based learning methods such as recorded recitations, podcasts, mobile apps, and repetition tools may help improve pronunciation, memory, and student engagement. These methods also support flexible and self-paced revision. However, concerns related to pronunciation accuracy, overdependence on technology, passive learning, reduced teacher–student interaction, and lack of standardized learning methods were also noted. Conclusion: Audio-assisted learning may be a useful supportive method for improving Sanskrit shloka retention in Ayurvedic education. Digital audio tools can increase accessibility, revision opportunities, and student engagement, but they should support not replace traditional teacher-guided learning. Further research is needed to assess their effectiveness and proper integration into Ayurveda education.
