Evaluation of Jwarahara Mahakashaya - A Review of its Therapeutic Potential

Jwarahara Mahakaśaya comprises a group of medicinal plants collectively indicated for the management of various types of Jwara (fever) through their Dipana (enhancement of digestive fire), Pacana (digestion of metabolic toxins), Śothahara (anti-inflammatory), and Dosha-praśamana (pacification of bodily humors) properties. The present study aims to critically review Jwarahara Mahakaśaya with respect to its textual references, drug composition, pharmacodynamic attributes-Rasa (taste), Guna (qualities), Virya (potency), and Vipaka (post-digestive effect)-and its probable mode of action in the pathogenesis (Samprapti) of Jwara (fever). A thorough review of classical Ayurvedic treatises, authoritative commentaries, and relevant contemporary research literature was undertaken. Analysis reveals that the constituent drugs predominantly possess Tikta (bitter) and Kashaya Rasa (astringent taste), Laghu (light) and Ruksha Guna (dry qualities), and Ushna Virya (hot potency), which collectively facilitate Ama-pacana (digestion of undigested toxic metabolites), Agni-dipana (stimulation of digestive and metabolic fire), and restoration of Doshic balance (homeostasis of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). Correlation with modern pharmacological studies indicates antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antimicrobial activities of several constituent herbs, thereby supporting their traditional therapeutic application. Thus, Jwarahara Mahakaśaya represents a rational, multi-targeted Ayurvedic formulation with substantial scope for evidence-based application in the management of febrile conditions. Further experimental and clinical studies are warranted to validate its efficacy and safety.
