Abstract

Chiruvilwadi kashayam is a classical Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation described in traditional Kerala text book Sahasrayogam. The classical indications of the formulation include Gudakeela (Arsas), Bhagandhara, Gulma and also told as stimulating jataragni immediately. Apart from its indications it is widely used in traditional clinical practices in various conditions. It is prepared out of six medicinal plants namely Chiruvilwa (Holoptelea integrifolia (Roxb.) Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa L.) Pippali (Piper longum L.) Sunti (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) Citraka (Plumbago zeylanica.) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). The formulation contains 6 ingredients which predominantly has Thiktha, Katu rasa, Laghu ruksha guna, Ushna virya and Madhura vipaka. This review aims to critically analyze the classical Ayurvedic references, phytochemical constituents, pharmacological activities, and therapeutic applications of Chiruvilwadi Kashayam. By integrating traditional knowledge with available scientific evidence, the article highlights the potential role of this formulation as a safe and effective therapeutic option in the management of anorectal and digestive disorders and underscores the need for further clinical and experimental studies to validate its efficacy.
