Abstract

Sandhigata Vata, correlated to osteoarthritis of the knee joint, is a common degenerative disorder predominantly affecting the middle-aged (>40yrs) and elderly population. It is characterized by Vatapurnadrutisparsha, Sandhi sotha and Prasarana akunchana pravruti savedana due to vitiation of Vata Dosha. Ayurvedic classics emphasize Snehana and Swedana as prime modalities in its management. Janu Basti, a localized external therapy, provides both these effects and is widely used in clinical practice. Objectives: To assess the efficacy of Janu Basti with Masha Taila as well as internal administration of Phalatrikadi Churna in the management of Sandhigata Vata. Methodology: A total of 31 patients were registered for the study, out of which 30 completed the treatment. Janu Basti was administered using Masha Taila for 7 days followed by a 7 days gap then again for 7 days, along with Phalatrikadi Churna (5gm twice daily after food with lukewarm water). Analysis was carried out based on subjective parameters such as Vatapurnadrutisparsha,Sandhi sotha, tenderness and Prasarana akunchana pravruti savedana, loss of flexibility along with objective parameters like ESR, TLC, and differential count. Statistical analysis was made using paired t-test. Results interpretation and discussion: From the study it is found that 36.67%patients were having marked improvement, 53.33% were moderate improvement and 10% mild improvement. Conclusion: Masha Taila (Janu Basti), with Phalatrikadi Churna, is an effective and safe therapeutic approach in the management of Sandhigata Vata. It significantly decreases symptoms and improves joint function.
