Lifestyle disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome are rapidly increasing worldwide due to sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy dietary habits, psychological stress and urbanization. Ayurveda considers Agni (digestive and metabolic fire) as the fundamental factor responsible for maintaining physiological balance and overall health. Impairment of Agni results in the formation of Ama, a pathological metabolic by-product produced due to incomplete digestion and impaired metabolism. Accumulation of Ama leads to obstruction of body channels (Srotorodha), tissue dysfunction and disease manifestation. The present narrative review aims to critically analyze the Ayurvedic concepts of Agni and Ama and their role in the pathogenesis and management of lifestyle disorders. Classical Ayurvedic texts including Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya were reviewed along with modern scientific literature obtained from PubMed, Google Scholar and other scientific databases. Classical literature reveals that disturbance of Agni is the root cause of many systemic diseases. Modern scientific evidence suggests that metabolic disorders are associated with chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction, which show conceptual similarity with the Ayurvedic concept of Ama. Restoration of Agni through proper dietary habits, lifestyle modifications and Ayurvedic therapeutic interventions may help in the prevention and management of lifestyle disorders. Understanding the integrative perspective of Agni and Ama provides valuable insights into metabolic diseases and highlights the relevance of Ayurvedic principles in contemporary healthcare.
