A Critical Review of Viruddha Ahara in Charaka Samhita and its Relevance in Modern Lifestyle Disorders

In Ayurveda, Ahara is regarded as one of the fundamental pillars of health and well-being. Among the dietary principles described in classical Ayurvedic literature, Viruddha Ahara (incompatible diet) is considered a major causative factor in the development of disease. Acharya Charaka explained Viruddha Ahara as unsuitable food combinations, preparations, dietary habits, or modes of intake that disturb digestion and metabolism, vitiate the Doshas, and initiate pathological changes in the body. Objective: This review aims to critically analyze the concept of Viruddha Ahara from classical Ayurvedic texts and examine its relevance in the context of modern dietary practices and disease development. Methods: Classical Ayurvedic literature, including Charaka Samhita, was reviewed along with contemporary scientific studies related to nutrition, metabolism, inflammation, oxidative stress, glycation, immune dysfunction, and chronic diseases. Results: The review indicates that modern unhealthy dietary practices such as consumption of processed foods, reheated oils, artificial additives, and irregular eating habits closely resemble the concept of Viruddha Ahara. These practices may contribute to metabolic disturbances and increase the risk of obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory illnesses, infertility, renal diseases, mental health disorders, and cancer. Conclusion: The concept of Viruddha Ahara provides a valuable preventive and holistic perspective on diet-related disorders. Understanding its relevance in the modern context may help promote healthier dietary habits and support the prevention of chronic lifestyle diseases.
